I offered to help out and since I can usually manage crafty tasks, I took on the diaper cake. Here is what I came up with!
The first several pictures were just to show the thought process and see how things would look and how best to attach the different items.
This first picture shows how I did not have enough rings to go all the way around the top so I used a rubber band to finish the ring. I will show how I covered this in the finished products.
Okay, this is the finished product. I used the monkey to hide the gap in the rings around the top layer, but I also used ribbon to cover the rubber band as shown in another picture below.
I used the wide ribbon to cover the rubber band holding the diapers and glued the "It's a Boy" ribbon on top of that. I used the top lid of a huge cookie tin that I had already decorated with paper and lace, I added the beaded ribbon to tie in the colors. The cookie tin lid is just sitting on top of the cake stand.
My friend and her husband are huge football fans.
Rattle ring
My friend's father is a police officer so this was a nice personal touch I think. I also curled ribbon to add some flare to the top so it didn't seem plain and bare.
Another rattle
Spoons are great to fill some spaces
Wash cloths help to add color and fill space
Some of the bottles were to small to be wedged into the rings so I used pipe cleaners to keep them in place.
Here is how I covered the rubber band on the top layer. I just took some ribbon I had left from the bottom two layers and just tucked it into the ring.
Here is where i tucked it into the other side.
For the middle support to hold all of the layers together I took 2 cheap tall bottles (Evenflo I think) and the bottom one is nipple pointing down, and I glued the bottoms together so the nipple is up on the top part. It served a couple purposes; something to hang the monkey, ribbon, and hat on. Since the police duck didn't have a hole in the bottom that I could put a pipe cleaner through to keep it on the top like the little yellow duck I used a pipe cleaner around it's neck to fix it in place to the bottle.
And the last part, I had made 2 burp cloths from the pre-fold cloth diapers and some fleece material. I folded them longways and then wrapped them around the top. This made it useful to have the rubber band holding the top ring on because it helped to hold the burp cloths nice and tight in place as opposed to having to use pins of some kind.
And that's it! As to how to make the diaper layers themselves I used a method I saw where the woman suggested using cake pans to form the different layers.
Here is the video on using the cake pans: Video
I did not follow the directions exactly, if I had I may have ended up with actual "layers" instead of a tower type cake, but do as you please, I do!Thanks for taking a look!
